Meeting David Hockney

 
As a runner up to the Book awards competition, I recently spent a couple of days with David Hockney in Bridlington. It was an amazing experience, I got to visit his home and studio. Seeing him at work and visiting his famous painting locations.

The Society supports people with information and quality services through its branches, over 230, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It advises professionals working in the field, funds research and campaigns for improved health and social care and greater public understanding of dementia.

THE COMPETITION

Understanding dementia and prevalence

Dementia describes a group of symptoms that is caused by diseases of the brain and is not a natural part of ageing. It robs people of their lives and simple daily tasks become a challenge; not knowing how to make a cup of tea, for example, or what to do with shoe laces. The behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia worsen with time. The pace of progression depends on the individual and each person’s experience is unique.

Key facts

 

o      700,000 people in the UK are living with dementia.  By 2025 there will be one million.  Its prevalence is already close to that of cancer and as the population ages, it will overtake it.

o      One in three people over 65 will die with dementia.

o      Dementia affects both men and women, from all walks of life and from every culture and creed.  Dementia can happen to anyone.

 

Your creative challenge

January 2009

Requirement - Develop supporting communications that work in conjunction with ‘Skin’ (Alzheimer's Society’s first 30 seconds awareness raising TV commercial).

Objectives of required material

  • To build on the communication and feel created in the TV commercial ‘Skin.’
  • To create complementary elements in the communication mix; working together to create an integrated awareness-raising campaign.
  • Icon: to become a recognisable device of the Society

Please complete at least 2 of these media choices:

·       Outdoor 48 sheet posters/underground posters

·       Bus sides

·       Tube cards

·       Online banners/scrapers – can use flash animation if desired.

·       A striking viral communication for people to send each other.

·       Develop an icon that represents the cause and/or the Society. (ie: a red ribbon representing the AIDS cause and pink for cancer - or the wristbands representing specific charities or the poppy for Veterans).  More guidance on the icon development at end of document.

Background on ‘Skin’, 30 second TV commercial and your supporting media

Primary aims

·     To raise awareness of the reality of dementia.

·     To draw the audience to the Society; the commercial concludes with a call to support Alzheimer's Society in its fight against dementia.

Target audience

Primary audience:

Men and women aged 40-60.

Reaching new audiences was important to the Society in the development of this execution. The above mentioned age group may have little or no personal experience or knowledge of this devastating condition.

Key motivators of primary audience:

  • Research shows that there is greater fear of dementia among 40-60 age group (particularly among women) than any other condition including cancer, heart disease/stroke.

 

  • This is also the age group whose parents are at risk of developing dementia and they may also have experienced grandparents with dementia.


Creative approach for the TV commercial

The TV commercial’s point of reference is female skin cream/beauty product commercials and follows some of the key elements of this ‘genre.’

 

Proposition of communication

 

Dementia robs a person of everything that makes them the individuals they are – their memories, their skills, recognising the ones they love and ultimately their lives. 

 ‘Skin’ 30” TV commercial treatment.

 

The tv spot recreates the look and feel of a cosmetic/beauty product anti-ageing commercial

Everything is lit softly and the set and wardrobe are in warm, neutral tones.

Three beautiful women in their late thirties, early forties are seen arranged elegantly in an almost limbo set They are clearly models and aware of their good looks.

We see close ups of each model smiling calmly at camera while the voice over talks about how we do everything we can to keep looking younger longer, fighting wrinkles, age spots and grey hair.  The models respond to these words by caressing their skin, running their hands through their hair etc.

The tone of the commercial changes when the voice over beings to talk about other changes like violent mood swings, needing help to dress, eat or go to the toilet and forgetting their own children’s names.  On hearing these words, the models’ poised smiles disappear, they look concerned, worried, disconcerted.  Their world has changed.

As the camera pulls back, as if deserting the models, the women appear less and less like haughty models and more like real people.   The voice over talks about the battle that has yet to be won, the fight against dementia for which there’s still no cure and the fact that 1 in 3 people over 65 die with dementia.

Viewers are asked to help Alzheimer’s Society lead the fight against dementia and a web site address is given for donations.

 

The desired response/what the viewer feels on viewing the piece
‘The thought of not knowing who I am, where I am and who the people around me frightens me. We need to find a cure’

 

The desired action/what the viewer can do
‘I want a world in which no-one has to go through this. I want to support work that will help find a cure or help families that are currently facing the challenges of this condition.’

 

Overall communication

There is no cure, dementia is terminal.

With your help we can fund research and continue to support people and families living with dementia.

Tone of voice

People with dementia must never be referred to as ‘sufferers’ nor should they be described as ‘suffering’ from dementia.  People with dementia, particularly in the early stages of diseases like Alzheimer’s, can be supported to have the best possible quality of life at every stage of their dementia journey.  They are not ‘victims’, they have an incurable illness.

Creative considerations

  • The Society’s name must never be separated from its strap line (Leading the fight against dementia).
  • People with dementia must always be portrayed with dignity and respect.
  • The brand’s visual language is photography and illustrations are not allowed.
  • Executions to be in line with the Society’s brand guidelines.

Your creative challenge: compliment the above TV commercial following the same guidelines in at least 2 of the following types of media.

Additional information about the creative challenge for an icon

Before the Society rebranded in 2007, a yellow ‘haloed’ triangle – which formed part of the logo was used as a lapel badge. Occasionally the triangle was used as a stand alone in printed material.

The issue with the triangle as an icon revolved around its relevance to the cause (dementia) and the work of the Society or how the charity supports people and families affected by dementia.

There was also a lack of understanding of what the triangle meant, both within the Society (staff and volunteers) as well as the public.

Because the Society themselves were unclear on the meaning of the triangle they were unable to develop communication around it and send appropriate messaging to their audiences and the public.

Please keep these things in mind if you choose to develop an icon.  It needs to have clear relevance and compliment the existing logo of the Alzheimer’s Society as an organization and the cause they represent.

Finally,  you will also need to write a 200 word statement (an abstract) about your idea, why you chose it and why you think it is a good idea.

Please send your sketch books and research. This is important to the judges who use it to see how well you have developed your idea.

Hockney Logo Competition

As part of the developing process I considered another idea of how to treat the logo.
Working on the premise of the David Hockney swimming pool and bath that feature in his work, I decided to photograph the logo under water.
Although i will not submit it as a final piece.
I think it creates an interesting effect with the water masking areas of the logo, it could be used as a looping ambient piece of media at the AND/OR award show.

Camera shooting, uses the Or as a subejct. Photographing it from different angles and then revealing the final logo.

Grand Day Out - Full Project

As a start to the new brief i decided to record my day. Shown here is me waking up, getting ready and traveling to uni. I shot it by using multi shot on my camera then sequencing them in QT. Didnt spend much time editing, just put the images together to inspire myself in preparation for the crit. As part of my journey features me riding to uni on my bike I may consider a bike ride as my day out.

Something mentioned by Andy in the crit today. Eames? Did some research and found a film that i had seen before. Interesting way to document, also the information graphics along side the footage telling you dimensions etc


Website - Bike Week, an event happening in June, could possibly produce a promotional piece to encourage people to have a go.

Thinking about who could be used a a client or as a direction for the outcome to be based.
Energy, Eco, Carbon footprint and carbon offsetting. How much energy do i use whilst out on my bike.

Wainwrights walks - Plan to document my day out using a little A5 sketchbook alongside photos and film. Wainwright has some great illustrations.


'Long Way Down' Tv series documenting travelling across many countries. Can i compare my simple day out to such a big journey.

Footage looks at Bike messengers in NY city. These guys are mad, needing to get from point A to B fast!!

Considering British Heart Foundation. Linking the bike ride to a get fit, keep healthy campaign or charity fundraiser. From the centre of Nottingham to the power station, the heart keeping the city going. BFH website, bike events.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station.
Doing some research on the Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Looking for facts about the station. It's said that 48 million cubic metes of water evaporates each year through the 8 cooling towers, the water is drawn from the Trent. [ref] Like the link of the water to the station. Heart??
The station can produce 2000MW, approx needs of 2 millian people, twice the pop. of Nottingham. E-on

Micheal Kenna, a photographer who i'd admired previously, one of his subjects was the station.

Small Global Installation Dealing with globalization and impact on the planet.
Really interests me this type of work. Using Vj equipment as a medium, highlighting important social issues.

Today I was discussing the ideas and inspiration found on my day out. Id put the forward the idea of 'lifeline'. How the canal, river Trent, road and railways, electrical lines and on to the powerstation were the life of the city. All elements allowing the city to exist. Had similar attributes to the body. The blood, bones and muscle of my body on the bike ride.

Whilst on my day out along the river the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station was is view all the way, i pretty much followed the power-lines all the way to it. I found this 3D view cameraBBC.co.uk.

Animated map i created to show the route i took. It shows the outward route i took but not the return.


Window into a bike ride - one of my favorite ways of capturing footage on the day out was by using my phone. I liked the way it allowed me to record the activity through the eyes of the bike and me while i was riding it. I thought as individual pieces they weren't very interesting but by placing them into a grid or window format they take on a new life.

DEVELOPMENT
As part of the day out i used the Big Track which follows the canal and the river.
The Nottingham Council are pushing cycling and walking as part as a healthy lifestyle and as part of the environmentally friendly commute. The Big Wheel has a strong brand and i wanted to incorporate the raw material id collected with the existing visual language to create a motion piece to promote the route and my day.

Kandinsky AE Development



Wassily Kandinsky - I chose Kandinsky for his work on abstraction, being said that he is first real abstract artist. I decided to combine this with the colour theory his work is based around and create an abstract world within the 20seconds.

This is a piece of artwork done by Kandinsky. For the sequence I have created my own impression of the piece using Illustrator ready for importing into AE.

Kandisnky based much of his work on the connection between visual language and music. These 1st experimental pieces show the sync of audio and visual in an abstract way.



Moving on from original idea. Although i liked the concept it wasnt appropriate and couldnt really be applied to a tv sequence. These next pieces are development on from that. Still tried to create a good pace and continue to use the music to suggest mood and conection with the visuals. They take on scultural like quality or an abstract universe.

Mackintosh Development AE and Final Cut

Combined imagery. During the crit it was suggested that i could try introducing imagery more recognizable to Mackintosh. I had already produced early pieces using such imagery
Shown below is an example of how it could work. I simply applied my existing motion pieces,overlaying the footage. Some bits work quite well however i may still keep the footage clean.

Watercolor was one of the main mediums to be used by Charles and his wife when producing their artwork and designs. This influence, led me to create my own watercolor and film.

NTU promotion brief

Things to take from brief; diversity amongst GD3, a variety of disciplines and skills. Refer to a complete unit 'GD3' but also as individuals. 

Charles Darwin, i had the theory of evolution running through my head as i looked at the brief. 
Note; evolution, natural selection, always adapting.
Thinking this could be a possible concept that; as designers we have evolved from the start of our creative lives, through university and onwards into the world. Always adapting to our environment. Poignant in a changing world. 

Can we be a designer species? 'creative selection' 

Also consider; materials, can weights, textures be used to represent the different disciplines.  
Typography? Maybe ask for comments from everyone, create a 'GD3 sentence, motto, strapline about our experience. 
Is it personal to each student, photographs of them with work?

Stats, graphics and information; collect some statistics about 'GD3' visualize through graphic design related consumables. How much ink? Pencils?

Time to fly the nest - using paper off cuts from the Graphics crew i made a nest to convey the idea that the students are flying the nest of the Boddington Building and Uni life. 
 Other elements are the typographic footprints left in the snow and the pencil shaving acorn shells. 

All relating to different species of design students. 

FREE RANGE IDEAS
From an earlier idea i had produced a nest from the left over paper used by NTU Graphic students. Considering an egg as part of this motion piece i decided to go with the idea of 'free range design'. 

Other ideas may include ' full fat design' - nothing skimmed. 'Something sweet' . 'organic thought' all in relation to food. Will give it a go and see. 

Started to use a camera.

Title Sequence Ideas & Development

Wassily Kandinsky, exploration into abstraction, said to be the first pure abstract artist. Kandinsky was influenced by  by a range of abstract theories about the relationship with colour, sound and geometry. 'Theory of Colour'
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe played heavily in the work of Kandinsky. His 'colour theory' can be seen here, shows the link between shape, colour and its relation to music. 
This could be incorporated into a sequence, syncing the visual language of colour and shape.


William Morris - Experimenting with organic plant designs, trying to give them the aesthetic of material. Looking at how the camera can explore the design.




Mackintosh Architecture plans and drawings scanned in, then playing with camera. 



Charles Rennie Mackintosh - Art Nouveau Style - Started to play around with watercolour paint, stencils and using to stop frame to capture it. To see how a craft approach could develop.
Also began to play around on After Effects, trying to create textures found in mackintosh designs. Starting with a stain glass and light effect



Three attempts at using light rays. 


Considering how typography could be used, using shadow to create depth to the typo. 

Using light to suggest and highlight the form used by Mackintosh.

Interactive Site

Whist researching into Artists for title sequence project i came across this site.
Purely interactive it simulates the method used by Jackson Pollock, with the mouse acting as paint trails that can change colour when you click.

Title Sequence Project - Research

  • Saul Bass - 'Spartacus' 
  • Article - Features an interesting title sequence plus information on creating titles for TV and Film. 
  • Article - Talks about movie title sequences, focusing on the new Juno movie. Saying that it rare to see creative sequences in films. It also talks about the process the designers went through to produce the Juno sequence, i was surprised how much of the imagery was handmade. Juno title sequence was produced by Shadow Play Studio.
  • DIGITAL KITCHEN - I always liked the title sequences for the TV shows, 'Six Feet Under' & ' NIPTUCK', very emotive. Remember them seeming quite apart from anything else at the time, they are almost like film titles. Heres a link that shows how Digital Kitchen put together the Six Feet Under sequence, interesting too see how they develop the idea.  Website - D-Kitchen
  • SubMarineChannel - Good site for title sequence; animation, motion graphics, mixed media and 3D. Point to consider is how much typography is integrated into imagery, or wether it sits separated on the screen. 
Used to watch the spaghetti westerns (Good,Bad and the Ugly) when i was younger, think the little dissolves,washes and light burn transitions that reveal a mono colour image are really effective. Website - Submarinechannel.com

Really liked this piece produced by Blu, fluid imagery changing with the environment. Also the time involved.

  • Kyle Cooper. Has made a name for himself as one of the best designers, seems that all the sequences you see, he's done it. Recent piece that really captures the essence of the film is the end sequences of 'Iron Man

  • Terry Gilliam - title sequence work, Monty Python work is just the best, i liked the way Gilliam used to rip apart found imagery such as old paintings and collage them. Turning them into something with complete contrast to the original use. 
12 Monkeys

  • James Bond Title Sequences - Different Designers - The title sequences for the Bond films have always had a strong identity. Usually containing a gun and plenty of ladies, the sequences are often reflective of the theme in the movie. Scale is used in an effective way. Something i've often enjoyed about the sequences is they appear a few minutes into the film, with the sequence often tied into footage. Not forgetting the use of a powerful music score over the top to set the mood. Website - James Bond Title Sequences over the years
